Captain John Owens McElhaney
Aug. 4, 1931 - Apr. 23, 2017

John was born on August 4, 1931 in Atmore, AL, he grew up in Mobile where he graduated from Murphy High School. John served his country in the U.S. Air Force. At the age of 21 he took a job at the Mobile Airport as a Ticket Agent for Eastern Airlines.

He had acquired an interest in airplanes as a boy and decided to take flying lessons. He was hired as a pilot with Eastern with only 400 hours of flying time and went on to enjoy a 38-year career. He liked to say that he retired from work the first day of his job as a pilot, he had found his passion in life! He was a loyal company man to Eastern and stood up for his beliefs and crossed the picket line when the machinist union struck Eastern, eventually causing the company to collapse as he had predicted it would.

He enjoyed his retirement years to the fullest playing golf, traveling, sailing his sailboat on Mobile Bay, spending time with and entertaining his huge circle of beloved friends. John is predeceased by his parents, Cliffie Mae and John McElhaney; baby brother, Jack McElhaney; and sister, Lynette Wooten McKean. He enjoyed 33 years of service to the airline and always believed that God was his co-pilot as he flew to far-away places. He enjoyed traveling, genealogy, football and a good political debate.

Prayer of the Pilot By Cecil Roberts

Lord of the Sea and Earth and Air

Listen to the Pilot’s Prayer -

Send him wind that steady and strong,

Grant that his engine sings his song

Of flawless tone, by which he knows

It should not fail him where he goes;

Landing, gliding, in curve, half-roll-

Grant him, O Lord, a full control,

That he may learn in heights of Heaven

The rapture that altitude has given,

That he shall know the joy they feel

Who ride Thy realms on Birds of Steel.

“The Love of the Pilot” By Cindy Freed

The pilot’s love is never a job

It is the passion that never subsides

And even when the pilot is grounded

He always seems to have an eye to the sky

As he marries his sweetheart

And raises a family

The years seem to go quickly by

He patiently waits

For call of the sky

But he continues to live out his life

Then all of sudden he looks to the sky

And it begins to tug at his heart

The passion remains

It was never restrained

For he was always ready to dart

God makes a visit and offers him grace

Ever so softly smiling down on his face

He tells him he’s ready

For adventure of plenty

The ride of his life

That takes him away

But never fear

For family is near

As he goes on to the next place

From a distance the sky may seem

 Blue and gray

But to the pilot it is so much more

It is the place that offers him strength in his heart

And roar of the engine that becomes lore

Loving a pilot is ever so easy

For they always seem to be so blessed

For who is as close to the all-mighty heavens

As the man who flies with a heart of gold in his chest

Robert Earl Sublett Sr.

Matthew Donald Akstin
July 8, 1931 - June 21, 2017

Matthew Donald Akstin, born in Astoria, NY in July of 1931, passed away on June 21st 2017, just a few days shy of his 86th birthday. Matthew was a lover of machinery, engines in particular. He served in the Air National Guard during the Korean War as Crew Chief for his Gooney Bird. During his voluntary enlistment, Matthew passed the GED, and later utilized the G.I. Bill to achieve his pilot's license and instructor's rating.

Through his keen knowledge of aviation, Matthew was noticed, and given the opportunity to take a test for Eddie Rickenbacker's Eastern Airlines at Rockefeller Center. Matthew's prowess earned him the responsibility of Captain for Eastern Airlines. He is now named as a pioneer of commercial aviation on a plaque in Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport. He loved to fly the DC-9, and was the pilot of the last commercial flight of the Lockheed Constellation.

Captain Akstin flew 29 years, before retiring to care for his wife, Janet Phalen Akstin in 1986. They sold their home, and lived full-time in a beautiful motorhome, where Matthew could dedicate twenty-four hours to nursing, yet still embrace life, seeing America with Jan. Matthew enjoyed visiting family and friends in the coach, and was invigorated by the freedom. He often recommended the lifestyle.

One of our captains, Richard E. (Dick) Boddy passed away in Oro Valley, Arizona on July 19th, from complications after heart valve replacement.  He was 89 years old.  I just e-mailed him last month and received an e-mail back from his wife who gave me the news.  Her name is Lou and they have been married 44 years.

Dick was one of my favorite captains on the DC-9 and a professional in every way.  He was also the captain who landed the L-1011 in Miami, as maintenance had accidentally left the oil drain plugs loose (no O-rings installed) on all engines on a maintenance check.  After landing with just one engine running that engine sized up on the runway.

I contacted you all several years ago about my cousin, James E. Hartley, and received a great response. I am still wondering what happened

to his bust that was located at the James E. Hartley Training Center in Miami.

I am also attempting to locate the radio transmissions from the hijacking.

I had the report and my laptop was stolen.

Please help me put the word for any items I may secure about my cousin.

My uncle also worked for Eastern as troubleshooter jet mechanics.  Their names we're Wade Hasty and Edward Hartley.  Uncle Ed was Jim's father.  He died in 1974.

I have been looking for Uncle Wade's children, Charles and Barbara.  I believe they lived in Miami Springs and then moved near Miramar, Fl.  His wife's name was Kitty.

Thank you,

Patricia(Pat) Hartley

Mr Floyd Hall passes away

It is with sadness to report that Floyd Hall passed away yesterday. Right to the end, he had great recall of events and people involved in matters Eastern. I was last with him Sunday. As he faded in and out of sleep, he apologized for not having a good day, yet he was animated when speaking about some of his old colleagues. He had a great love for the Eastern Airlines family saying on more than one occasion that his years with Eastern were the best of his career.May he rest in peace.
